Tummy tucks aren’t just for those wanting to look great for swimsuit season. This is a procedure that has many applications and benefits for those that want to regain their figure, look great in clothes, or feel good about their bodies. Here in the office of Dr. Togba and Dr. Ellis, we are proud to offer this service to those that desire to improve the appearance of their shape. To help you understand if you’re a candidate for a tummy tuck, let’s look at what the procedure entails and why it is performed in the first place.

Patients usually have concerns about the three items listed below:

Too much skin
Too much skin and fat
Laxity of abdominal wall muscles

The most common reasons for the above are multiple childbirths, large volume weight loss by diet and exercise, and surgical procedures with the intention of large volume weight loss (gastric bypass, banding or sleeve). OR…you may be like many people who with age, sequester fat in hard to lose places i.e. our abdomens, hips and thighs.

What will a tummy tuck do for me?
Improving the appearance of the abdomen is a great self-esteem boost for many patients.

The tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia in an out-patient surgery center. The areas of the abdomen that are addressed during surgery are:

1.) Removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen (below the belly
button)
2.) Tightening loose abdominal wall muscles with sutures
3.) Contouring the upper abdominal skin

What is changed and what isn’t changed by surgery:
Stretch marks may be removed if they are located below the belly button but upper abdominal marks will remain. However these marks may be less noticeable. This surgery does not address any fat located behind the abdominal muscles.

What is my recovery time?
The time to recovery depends on a number of factors but usually between 2-4 weeks. Complete healing at 6 weeks, with improvements in stamina and scar appearance occurring over the following 3 months. Most people are back to work after two weeks with some restrictions on heavy lifting.
