Gynecomastia is a benign enlargement of the male breast resulting from overgrowth of the breast gland. Some drugs and certain medical problems have been associated with the overdevelopment of the male breast, but there is no known cause in the majority of cases. Breast reduction surgery can help men who are self-conscious about the appearance of their chest.
In male breast reduction, fat and glandular tissue are removed from the breasts either by liposuction or direct excision through an incision around or through the nipple and areola. In extreme cases, excess skin may also be removed in order to produce a flatter, firmer chest.
The procedures are done under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Patients are generally back to work in two to three weeks.
