Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is appropriate for a woman experiencing shoulder, neck and upper back pains secondary to the weight of the breasts. It is also appropriate for those whose breasts are disproportionally larger than the rest of the body frame. The goal of breast reduction is to reduce the size of the breasts while improving the overall contour and shape of the breasts.
Breast reduction is done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure may be enhanced by liposuction to reduce extra fat deposits under the arm. Recovery is relatively quick with most patients back to work two weeks after surgery.
